The Addams’ Family Musical tells the creepily classic tale of Gomez Addams and his tricks-and-treats troop, with a twist. Wednesday Addams is all grown up, and she has fallen in love with a *gasp* “normal” boy from the right side of the tracks. When the girl who used to sport long, black braids approaches her family about marrying her true love, the ordinary Lucas Beineke, the remainder of the Addams brood is less than thrilled. Equally uneasy about Lucas and Wednesday’s nightmarish nuptials, are Lucas’ parents Mal and Alice (Malice) who are dealing with their own martial rut. The families gather to celebrate the young couple, but “toasting to love” seems to be the last thing on everyone’s mind. Not wanting to lose his frighteningly favourite big sister to the dark side of marriage (barf!) Pugsley decides to reveal Wednesday’s true, black-scale colours by slipping her one of Grandma’s potions. Pugsley’s plan is foiled when Alice drinks the potion instead, revealing that she finds her marriage to be passionless. Her humiliated husband tries to scurry out, but Uncle Fester and the Addams ancestors have other plans for their undead relatives, and their newfound friends.
The Addams’ Family musical reminds its audience that, while it may be ever so difficult, a little patience and understanding, coupled with just the right amount of spooky spells, can help to calm the rocky waters of our lives. Even though the Addams’ home might be filled with terrifying torture, chilling chaos and petrifying pandemonium, they always find a way to welcome the misfits and the outsiders with open, skeletal arms and wrap those outcasts in a warm, bony hug; even if they are just plain old conventional folks…like yourselves.
